Frequently Asked Questions

Public Provident Fund (PPF) is a long-term savings scheme offered by the Government of India through post offices and authorised banks. It provides guaranteed, tax-free returns and is one of the safest investment options available to Indian residents.

The PPF interest rate for Q1 FY2024-25 (April–June 2024) is 7.1% per annum, compounded annually. The rate is set by the Ministry of Finance every quarter and has remained at 7.1% since April 2020.

PPF enjoys EEE (Exempt-Exempt-Exempt) tax status. (1) Deposits qualify for deduction under Section 80C up to ₹1.5 lakh per year. (2) Interest earned is completely tax-free. (3) Maturity proceeds are exempt from income tax. This makes PPF one of the most tax-efficient instruments in India.

Partial withdrawal is allowed from the 7th financial year. You can withdraw up to 50% of the balance at the end of the 4th year or the immediately preceding year, whichever is lower. Premature full closure is allowed only after 5 years in specific cases like medical emergencies or higher education.
