What is HEIC / HEIF?
HEIC stands for High Efficiency Image Container and HEIF stands for High Efficiency Image Format. Both refer to the same modern image format developed by the MPEG group. It stores images with significantly better compression than JPEG — a HEIC photo can be half the file size of an equivalent JPEG while keeping the same visual quality. HEIC files can also store multiple images (like Live Photos or bursts) and include depth maps and other metadata.
Why does iPhone use HEIC instead of JPG?
Apple introduced HEIC as the default photo format starting with iOS 11 (2017) because it cuts storage use roughly in half compared to JPEG while keeping the same perceived quality.
